# Beer Glassware: Flute Glass

The flute glass is a narrow, tall vessel originally developed for sparkling wines, with the primary objective of preventing the loss of CO2 dissolved in the liquid.

Typically used for toasts at celebrations, depending on its size and shape, the flute glass capacity generally varies between 180 and 300 ml.

It was in the early 18th century when drinking vessels transitioned from metal and ceramic to glassware, with the flute glass being part of this transition.

However, it was not until the 1950s that the flute glass began to gain popularity, as it helped avoid spills at events with high activity—a common problem with the [coupe or martini glass](https://www.thebeertimes.com/guia-de-vasos-y-copas-para-cocteles/), which was definitely an advantage as the night progressed and more glasses were consumed.

Its interior cone is designed to retain carbonation by reducing the surface area of the opening, while a nucleation point at the base helps keep the drink active and vibrant inside.

The greater presence of bubbles creates more texture in the taster’s mouth, while its deep bowl allows for greater visual effect, ideal for appreciating the liquid’s color, its transparency, and especially both the carbonation level and bubble size.

And although until today they are most commonly used for sparkling wines, flute glasses are also very popular for serving certain beers, especially [Czech and German Pilsner](https://www.thebeertimes.com/pilsner-checa-vs-pilsner-alemana-referencias-de-estilo/) or Belgian [Lambic and Gueuzes](https://www.thebeertimes.com/lambic-vs-gueuze-referencias-estilo/).
