# Kopparberg Pear: Tasting Notes and Recommended Pairings

In 1882, thirty-six brewers from Kopparberg, a small village in Västmanland, joined forces to produce svagdricka, Sweden’s traditional low-alcohol beer. More than a century later, that same brewery makes Kopparberg Pear, the sweet perry the company calls its hero and suggests serving over a mountain of ice in a large glass.

The brand’s modern history began in 1994, when brothers Peter and Dan-Anders Bronsman bought a brewery that had just come out of bankruptcy. Under their management, the brand became known outside Sweden for its [fruit ciders](https://www.thebeertimes.com/en/types-of-cider/), among which the Pear remains the house reference.

## Tasting Notes and Impressions

Kopparberg Pear is a sweet, light and very juicy perry, with a pear you recognize from the first sip. Its profile is that of ripe pear juice with bubbles, with no sharp or bitter edges, made to be drunk very cold.

### 1. Appearance

Very pale straw, almost colorless against the light, clear and bright, with a lively, fine-bubbled carbonation rising steadily through the glass and a minimal white head that disappears within a few seconds.

### 2. Aroma

It opens with ripe pear and pear juice on a sweet nose of medium intensity; mid-nose, a candied note close to fruit candy appears, giving it more of a sweet-shop air than an orchard one.

### 3. Flavor

It starts sweet, with ripe pear juice, a touch of candied apple and a low acidity that barely balances the sugar; mid-palate, the fruit stays juicy, with no bitterness or tannins, through to a short, clean and sweet finish that leaves the pear in the mouth.

### 4. Mouthfeel

Light body, easy-going and quick on the palate, carried by a lively carbonation, with no astringency, no alcohol warmth at 4.5% and no roughness on the way down.

### 5. Overall Impression

As a product, Kopparberg Pear is an unpretentious commercial perry, sweet from start to finish, with a pear closer to juice than to fermented fruit. Its greatest virtue is that it actually tastes of pear, something not every fruit cider manages, although anyone looking for dryness or a bit of acidity will find it cloying. If you like sweet, refreshing drinks for a summer terrace, serve it over plenty of ice, as the brewery recommends, because the melting ice gradually lightens it. If you come from a [tasting of dry ciders](https://www.thebeertimes.com/en/how-to-taste-cider/) or traditional perries, on the other hand, you will find it closer to a soft drink than to pear wine.

## Suggested Pairings

Its marked sweetness and low acidity steer it toward fruit desserts, mild cheeses and dishes with a spicy or salty touch that contrasts with the sugar.

### 1. Main Courses

A mild chicken curry or pork and pineapple tacos work well, because the sweetness of the pear tames the heat, while the lively bubbles cleanse the fat between bites.

### 2. Cheeses

A creamy blue cheese, such as a gorgonzola dolce, finds in it the classic contrast between pear and blue cheese, since the sugar in the perry softens the salt and the bite of the mold.

### 3. Vegetarian Dishes

An arugula salad with pear, walnuts and goat cheese goes well with its fruity profile, because the drink echoes the fruit on the plate while the bubbles lighten the cheese.

### 4. Desserts

A pear crumble, a fruit tart or a lemon sorbet is its natural territory, as long as the dessert is not sweeter than the perry.

## Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
