Untappd, the most widely used beer check-in and rating app in the world, released version 5.0 on October 15, 2026, and with it adds wine, liquor and spirits to its catalog. The database grows from more than 3 million beers and other drinks to nearly 10 million references thanks to an agreement with Wine-Searcher.

The company presents the update as the biggest in its history. Beyond the expanded catalog, the app debuts a complete redesign with new navigation, light and dark mode, personalized recommendations and stats broken down by drink type and venue.

For anyone who would rather not see gin bottles among their IPAs, a toggle in settings keeps the app focused on beer. The move confirms the direction Untappd had already set in 2025 with the opening to ciders, wines and cocktails in its check-in guidelines.

What Does Wine-Searcher Bring to Untappd?

Wine-Searcher is the most consulted price and availability database for wine and spirits on the internet. For more than 20 years it has been compiling the daily listings of retailers, producers and auction houses around the world.

That catalog is what now gets integrated into Untappd. According to the company, users can search, check in and rate a Rioja or a mezcal as easily as they have checked in a beer until now.

Julian Perry, CEO of Wine-Searcher, summed up the division of roles between the two platforms this way.

For two decades, our focus has been on accuracy and depth of data. Combining it with Untappd’s discovery features and community lets people explore wine and spirits in a way that is personal, social and useful.

Next Glass, Untappd’s parent company, describes the partnership as the foundation for the platform’s next stage. The app no longer presents itself as a home for beer discovery and now defines itself as a destination for the entire world of drinks.

Why Is Untappd No Longer Just About Beer?

The official explanation lies with the consumer. Trace Smith, CEO of Next Glass, argues that today’s drinker switches categories with the occasion and that the modern beverage consumer doesn’t want to live inside a box.

A brewery might also make hard seltzer, canned cocktails and a non-alcoholic line, and a beer drinker might order a mezcal the next day. With Untappd 5.0, we’re giving consumers one home for every drink they discover.

The argument has a second, commercial reading. Many breweries have diversified their portfolios into seltzers, ready-to-drink cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks, and Next Glass wants those products promoted from the same producer profile they already use for their beers.

The change arrives in a busy year for beer review sites. In August BeerAdvocate became independent again after six years under the Next Glass umbrella, and in late 2024 RateBeer shut down for good.

What Changes in the App With the Redesign?

Untappd 5.0 debuts a new interface, a refreshed brand and light and dark modes. Navigation was rebuilt to move faster between the app’s sections.

Personalized recommendations suggest drinks, producers and venues based on each user’s history. Stats, one of the sections the community consults most, now break down check-ins by drink type and by venue.

The community section was also rebuilt to help find new places and friends, with all the network’s updates gathered in one spot. For those who write their ratings with care, the guide on how to review a beer that we published in 2025 still applies.

Can You Still Use Untappd Just for Beer?

Yes. A toggle in settings keeps the experience focused on beer and hides the other categories, without giving up the redesign or the new features.

Location-based check-ins remain the feature that sets Untappd apart from other rating apps. Each drink can be saved with the venue where it was enjoyed, which makes it possible to reconstruct what was drunk, where and when, from a rare bottle to a local find on a trip.

Untappd has over 12 million users and nearly 1.6 billion check-ins worldwide. Its product for venues, Untappd for Business, manages beer, wine, spirits and food menus in nearly 80 countries.

The update is free and already available on Apple’s App Store and on Google Play. Whether the user base embraces it as naturally as the limited editions it chases every weekend is the question Next Glass will have to answer in the coming months.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What changes in Untappd 5.0 compared with the previous version?

Version 5.0 adds wine, liquor and spirits to the catalog, which grows from more than 3 million to nearly 10 million drinks. It also completely redesigns the app with new navigation, light and dark mode, personalized recommendations, stats by drink type and venue and a revamped community section.

2. Where do the wines and spirits now listed on Untappd come from?

They come from Wine-Searcher, the wine and spirits price and availability database that has spent more than 20 years compiling listings from retailers, producers and auction houses around the world. Untappd integrates that catalog so that every reference can be searched, checked in and rated like a beer.
