The AnDer glass is a specialized design intended for the optimal tasting and sampling of beer, created by expert brewers seeking a better alternative to wine glasses or generic vessels, which do not always reveal the sensory nuances of this beverage.

The idea for the AnDer glass was born from the collaboration between beer consultant Derek Walsh, beer sommelier André Köppen, and glass designer Alfred De Groot.

This team identified that, unlike wine — which has internationally recognized official tasting glasses — beer lacked a universal design capable of analyzing all its attributes in a professional manner.

After more than three years of design, testing, and optimization, and following multiple prototypes, the AnDer glass was finalized with the help of Royal Leerdam glassworks, a European firm with a long history in high-quality glass.

The model was officially launched in December 2015 and has since been adopted by both beer professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Design and Functionality

The AnDer glass stands out for its wide chalice shape with a narrower mouth, which favors different phases of the tasting experience:

  • Visual appreciation, as it allows detailed observation of color, clarity, and head formation.
  • Head generation and retention, with nucleation points at the base that help release CO₂ in a controlled manner and maintain a stable foam crown.
  • Aroma concentration, thanks to the closed upper section that directs aromatic compounds toward the taster’s nose.
  • Enhanced palate experience due to the rim geometry, which modulates the liquid entry, enhancing flavors and texture.

AnDer Glass Capacities and Uses

The AnDer glass was initially popularized in a format of approximately 20–26 cl, ideal for tasting sessions where small pours of 10 to 15 cl are served, although larger capacity versions also exist (such as 41 cl) that allow enjoying full servings of beer.

Thanks to its versatile design, the AnDer is not only suitable for professional tastings, but can also be used to enjoy beer in more informal settings, while preserving the quality of the sensory experience.

Why Does Specialized Glassware Matter?

Before the AnDer, many tasters used ISO (International Organization for Standardization) wine glasses to evaluate beer.

However, these glasses do not always allow aromas and flavors to be perceived accurately, as their design is not optimized for the unique characteristics of beer.

The AnDer was developed precisely to address this technical gap in beer culture.
